Christmas Full Moon 2015   25 comments

Christmas Full Moon 2015

The rare Christmas Day Full Moon was the first lunar event of its kind to occur in 38 years and the last Full Moon of 2015. Known as the Cold Full Moon due to its early winter occurrence the last Christmas Full Moon to rise in the skies of Earth was in 1977 and according to NASA’s Goddard Centre we will not see another such event until 2034.

For those who completely missed the whole event due to bad weather it looked like this!

‘As you gaze up at the Christmas moon, take note that Nasa has a spacecraft currently orbiting Earth’s moon.’

– Nasa’s Nancy Neal Jones, from the Goddard Space Flight Centre in Maryland

‘As we look at the moon on such an occasion, it’s worth remembering that the moon is more than just a celestial neighbour.

– NASA’s John Keller

Well it would be if anyone had actually been able to see it! And as to the NASA spacecraft… not much hope of spotting that if no-one could see a great big shiny globe like the Moon in the oh so painfully cloudy-couldn’t-see-a-nuclear bomb-if-it-was-on-a-collision-course-with-Earth skies! But if you could have seen a tiny little speck of spacecraft toddling past us this is what it would have looked like….

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), which has been studying the moon’s mountains and craters since 2009, giving us some truly priceless input into our knowledge of the moon.

(LRO is managed by NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington.)

It has to be admitted however, albeit rather grudgingly since most of us were afflicted with too much cloud cover to see anything at all, 2015 has been a pretty unbelievable year as regards events of the lunar variety… okay most of us won’t be able to name any since we never actually got to see any but we probably all heard the odd news flash about the last one – the extra rare one back in September when we treated to the awesome – not, if like the rest of us you saw absolutely nothing but grey, cloudy skies – Supermoon Lunar Eclipse. Very pretty…if you could actually see the thing!!

The Mansionoid Meteorite Showers (3)   17 comments

The Mansionoid meteorite Showers(3)

New Horizons_Image Credit: Google ImagesCindy, the intrepid traveller and highly skilled, photographer was hitching a ride aboard NASA’s New Horizons probe, busy capturing extraordinary images of Pluto and beyond for NASA although she didn’t actually realise that this was the case, and was instead happily engrossed with preparing a series of exotic intergalactic blog posts for her WordPress blog!

She couldn’t help but notice that The Holler appeared to be accompanying her… a strange phenomenon she noted absently, smiling as she added a caption to her latest photo, but presumably nothing to be overly concerned about – after all NASA knew what they were doing…didn’t they?

She was a little surprised the next time she pointed the camera lens into the depths of intergalactic space to be confronted with the extraordinary sight of the Cameraoid meteorite shower and a very large black hole swirling towards her…great photography! She thought unfazed by the situation.

With the natural expertise of a born-photographer she aligned the complex photographic apparel of the New Horizon’s probe with the fast-approaching vortex and took a closer look at the tiny speck of starlight twinkling away cheerfully in the distant heart of it… Tom’s Mansion!! Cindy was delighted to find such a photographic gem availing her vision and further magnification proved the “starlight” to be the lights from the the Cameraoid meteorite shower glinting and sparkling off the bright new windows the Mansion had recently fitted for itself without Tom’s knowledge… and it was snowing! How wonderful! Cindy beamed to herself, admiring the architectural enhancements highlighted by glittering snow flakes against the backdrop of galactic space…it all looked rather warped however, she noted frowning slightly…must be something to do with the effects of the temporal shift occurring within the vortex New Horizons reported after completing a tentative probe into the subject. She should probably check out his blog page…he’d probably got a post up about that by now!

Tom most definitely had not posted anything on his blog page! In fact he wasn’t even thinking about it at that point, for a change. Instead he was busy fielding a particularly large and dangerous key that was burning it’s way towards the Mansion which itself seemed to be indulging in some serious shake rattle and roll techniques. He eyed up his reflection in the Mansion’s rather impressive new wiTom's Mansion took many forms! Image Credit: Google Imagesndows, impressed by the level of wildness his hair had reached whilst he dived and rolled in tune with the Mansion’s shake rattle and roll dance moves…possibly the perfect time for a selfie…well…possibly not right now…

A bone rattling shudder rumbled through the Mansion as it’s pace through the vortex – or at least Tom hoped it was travelling through…this would imply there was a way out…hopefully….eventually…. – increased rapidly surpassing the speed of light…the effects of which were…different!

Tom gurgled and somewhere in the part of his brain that was still vaguely rational and not, unlike the rest of him suddenly flattened and distorted like a lump of play-dough accidently trodden on and flattened into…. Curious shapes….warp speed he presumed giving up temporarily on the hope of recapturing normality again anytime soon. Oddly, and presumably as a consequence of having passed light speed and careered cheerfully onto into warp speed Tom’s eyeballs sprouted extraordinarily long stems and popped out of his currently flattened skull to wave around enthusiastically like two magnificent water lilies…there was no shortage of “interesting” things to feast the popped out of the head eyeballs on…..Tom just wasn’t sure whether his brain cells were at this moment working well enough to register what he was seeing….Quite possibly not he decided, taking note of what his inner physicist was working over time to explain to him.

In a concerted effort to prove his inner Physicist wrong the popping eyeballs sprouted a sudden growth burst – distorted reality his inner physicist whispered in his head reassuringly…not, and the view down the telescope that was a prime feature in the Mansion’s official Observatory presented itself to the flattened Tom in dramatic scenes of ….

The Mansion underwent a certain amount of distortion... Image Credit: Google Images

Return to the Catacombs Be right back

(Disused Eurostar Terminal at London Waterloo Railway Station)

Having tunnelled into the catacombs back in August in the vain hope of sneaking a peep at the disused Eurostar station at London Waterloo, ever hopeful Wolfie returned in September….it wasn’t exactly successful lol Winking smile but possibly a slight improvement on the first attempt. No joy getting permission to tour it or sneaking in through the back door either but probably the best that can be hoped for given the current state of affairs on the global terrorist scale, pretty much guaranteeing Wolfie will be arrested instantly the moment she makes any official request to get inside!

London Waterloo StationLondon Waterloo Station2

London Waterloo is a big, busy railway station and perhaps as a consequence nobody seemed worried about a thrill-seeking Wolfie padding around sniffing hopefully around the decidedly inaccessible Eurostar bit of it doing her poor best to enjoy a little covert photo shooting!

They really didn't want to let me in the disused Eurostar Terminal!!Turns out this time it wasn’t quite so boarded up….the somewhat imposing all-consuming gates blocking the way in were seriously frustrating but where there’s a Wolfie will there’s a Wolfie way…of sorts….Smile

So near yet so far!! The Wolfie paw wouldn’t stretch very far but the trusty mobile phone camera proved a handy little chappie for doing what Wolfie’s paw on it’s own couldn’t….

Thought about sending it in on it’s own to go touring for me…it’s only small…nobody would notice a little bouncy mobile phone toddling around the disused Eurostar section on a private, unauthorised photo shoot on Wolfie’s behalf would they? Well…maybe not…

Just a litttle look inside? Pretty please Transport for London!!Just a litttle look inside? Pretty please Transport for London!!2

Not wishing to look too suspicious Wolfie decided to look away…at something else…

…..distract the racing mind from it’s various wicked ideas about gaining entry… best wander away and have a look outside perhaps…

Where to look when trying not to look too interested in the Eurostar Terminal!Outside entrance to Waterloo Station heading for South Bank

It didn’t really work!  Thumbs down

Let me in! Let me in! Let me in!!!! _ Eurostar entrance

Wolfie just got braver and embarked on some covert..or not lol scouting and photo shooting whilst debating whether it was likely to attract the kind of attention from the station staff that might get me where I really wanted to be…

International Terminal sign hangs silent above the boarded off Eurostar Terminal waiting for it's visitors to return...Hints of what lies beyond and out of reach....the view through the way too high to see much, Eurostar Terminal window!

The annoyingly inaccessible Eurostar entrance!

That didn’t work either! Angel

Best go round the side and have a look outside… Thumbs up

Better still…go for a walk! Shake off the apocalyptic cravings! Have a think about what to do next…maybe there’d be a naughty entrance Wolfie hadn’t spotted so far…

To be continued…..

Battle of Waterloo 2015!

WATERLOO STATION/EUROSTAR TERMINAL

Never a dull moment in London! Strange things happen when Icewolves head out for a planned photo shoot involving the disused Eurostar terminal at London Waterloo railway station. Yes…well…strange location too perhaps but I like that sort of thing and besides which it would have made a great setting for a creepy, apocalyptic blog post!

Eurostar concourse silent and disused_google imagesEurostar trains_google images

Not too surprisingly it didn’t go quite to plan…it was locked off, boarded off, patrolled by railway security and the unavoidable presence of uniformed police officers and a whole bunch of CCTV cameras, making it just about impossible to sneak a way in without getting thoroughly and utterly arrested on the spot. And believe you me I gave it my very best shot! I really, really did want to have a look! So Plan A didn’t work…didn’t even get a photo or two of the odd glimpses I did get!

However not to be deterred…onto Plan B! Plan B consisted loosely of “let’s try sneaking in unnoticed through the ‘back door!’ “ Essentially this meant a tour round the outside of the station and a hike up a busy London street to find a side-route into the back streets which led to the back side of the station and Eurostar Terminal…needless to say that didn’t get me anywhere either…

NOTE TO TRANSPORT FOR LONDONEurostar terminal before closure_google images

And if anyone from Trabsport for London/British Rail/Eurostar chances on this post by some remote and inexplicable chance…”It’s not fair!!! I only wanted to have a little look, take a few photos for my blog post and explore a unique and interestingly eerie environment to kick start my starved imagination into producing a zombie apocalypse type masterpiece to post on my blog!! Not a lot to ask was it? But you wouldn’t let me in! I think next time you should give me a guided tour! “

DISUSED TUNNELS – LEAKE STREET – BATTLE OF WATERLOO

clip_image013clip_image015

Mission very much not accomplished there was only one thing for a darkly disappointed Icewolf to do…go explore the disused tunnels! What I didn’t expect to find was “The Battle of Waterloo” well underway in “The Tunnel” – located in the disused Leake Road, road tunnel far, far below in the depths under Waterloo station this “designated legal graffiti area” has not been used as a road tunnel since the closure of the Eurostar terminal at Waterloo station in 2007.

BANSKY – CANS FESTIVAL

One year later at The Cans Festival organised by famous street artist Banksy a murals and art exhibition was held in Leake Street tunnel leading to “The Tunnel” becoming a well-known “graffiti hotspot.” Well…not that well known! Wolfie knew nothing about it till now! But hey! What’s a little ignorance amongst friends? 😉

As the street artists at “The Battle of Waterloo 2015” show very clearly the Leake Street Tunnel has been very successful at maintaining its prestigious position as a graffiti hotspot.

Wolfie was delighted to discover in the course of the Icewolfie travels that there was even an underground Jamaican food stall available to supply the hungry masses…In the absence of a properly functioning photo album inserter – upside down photos are not the most inspiring sight! – these four images are the best that can be provided of this happy discovery…. the oddly flattened rectangular shape of them is not Icewolf, it is the dodgy blog editor!!!!

Time and Space and 3-D Printing! (London Science Museum)

Inside the Science Museum      Space Science proving popular!

Technology dates worryingly fast!

Our last tour of the London Science Museum took us on a flight of fancy from Space flight to 3-D Printing. This visit explores the environment of the museum and some of the “ancient artefacts” (see above photo) lol (anyone remember these? It wasn’t all that long ago and already they are history!) Smile

We also take a closer look at life of an astronaut in space… note the appetising food on display! Slurp! Slobber! 3-D Printing with its ups and downs in terms of success pops up amongst the photos…well guns just aren’t made the way they used to be… Winking smile

Astronaut and space suit  Astronauts food supply in space fridge! Yum! Fine US spacecraft for astronaut to relax in...

Oops! When 3-D Printing goes wrong....!  3-D Printing when it goes right....

And the trusty mobile phones of yesteryear shouldn’t be forgotten… maybe you recognise one of yours amongst them! And the UK’s Greenwich Time Service is surely worthy of a showing Smile How else would we keep track of time and the super speedy (it would seem!) passing of history?

     Anyone still remember these?!!Early mobiles...longer lasting than a smartphone!Modern day sundial ;)
