CANIS MAJOR AND SIRIUS

Constellation Canis Major is the homeland of Sirius. This star goes by the name Alpha Canis Majoris and less formally, the Dog Star. Sirius holds the title of brightest star in the sky, and it is the fifth closest known star system. Canis Major also contains the Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy, M41 – an open star cluster, and Thor’s Helmet – an emission nebula. Also included are the colliding spiral galaxies, NGC 2207, and IC 2163. They are approximately eighty million light years distant and were discovered by the English astronomer John Herschel in 1835.

Sirius –Alpha Canis Majoris

Sirius is a binary system star with an apparent magnitude of -1.42. The Sirius system is only 8.6 light years distant Sirius is a large, bluish-white star, known as a white main sequence star, and the brightest of the 2-star system. It has a mass twice that of the Sun and a luminosity twenty-five times greater. Its tiny, and thereby faint, but extremely hot, blue-white companion star, known as Sirius B, is one of the most massive white dwarfs known. With a mass of 0.98 solar masses, it is almost on a par to the Sun in this respect, and slightly smaller in size than Earth. These binary stars take approximately 50 years to orbit one another. The Sirius system is so close to Earth that if many of the well-known constellations seen in the skies of Earth were viewed from Sirius, they would appear almost identical to those in Earth’s skies.

Mythologically speaking, Canis Major is allied with the world’s fastest canine, known as Laelaps This dog could never fail to capture any prey it was in pursuit of. The god Zeus bestowed this dog upon Europa as a gift, together with a spear that was incapable of missing its target. Laelaps was given a position in the nocturnal sky and became the Canis Major constellation.

Sopdet – Egyptian goddess of the Sky and Stars, personifies Sirius the Dog Star. Her symbols are stars and dogs. The arrival of Sirius in the sky heralds the approach of New Year and this event is celebrated with a festival – ‘The Coming of Sopdet.’ In Greece she is known as the Greek goddess Sothis, and Sirius, as Seirios. – the celestial dog in the constellation of Canis Major – the Great Dog and the Guard dog of Orion.

Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy (CMa Dwarf)

Picture2

The Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy (CMa Dwarf), also known as “Overdensity,” is a small, irregular galaxy, roughly elliptical in shape, and thought to be the closest galaxy to our location in the Milky Way. It is roughly 25,000 light years distant from our solar system and 42,000 light years from the Galactic Centre of the Milky Way. The next closest galaxy (70,000 light years) is the Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy (SagDEG) discovered in 1994.

The Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy was first discovered in 2003 by an international team of astronomers using data derived via the “Two-Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS)” (infrared survey). Observation of CMa is difficult due to its masking by the stars, dense dust, and vapour in the of our galaxy.

Its “irregular galaxy” status is due to it being gradually torn asunder by the gravitational force of our own galaxy. Gravitational interactions between the two galaxies, have resulted in extensive, astral streams – formed by tidal forces, which were plundered from the Canis Major dwarf galaxy. They went on to wind themselves three times around the Milky Way, forming a 200,000-light year-long strand-like edifice consisting of a nebulous circle of stars, vapours, and dust which encircles the Milky Way, and is known as the “Monoceros Ring”.

Monoceros - the Unicorn

It was during the investigation of this ring – discovered in 2002, by astronomers conducting the “Sloan Digital Sky Survey,” that the Canis Major Dwarf galaxy was discovered, one year later in 2003. As a result, it swiped the title of “closest galaxy to our location in the Milky Way” from the Sagittarius Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy (SagDEG)

Tom's Greek Mansion2

Tomansion Dimensions Part 2,  inspired by and dedicated to my wonderfully imaginative friend, Tom – You can visit Tom’s blog at The Mansionic Perspective and share in the wonders of his blog world, where you can also enjoy his perspective of the trip through The Galactic Vortex – following on from Shifty Mansionic Dimensions on this blog. You can learn all about gargoyles in his post The Winged Lion and the Gargoyle, and enjoy a further fantastic post about Winged Wolves so do check this one out as well – it’s awesome! The Wild Winged Wolves of the Wilderness

“TomAstreaus! This is the Temple of Sopdet – Egyptian goddess of the sky and stars, she personifies Sirius the Dog Star – the Star of the Celestial Wolf. Can you see it? Over there above the Great Pyramid! This is wonderful news – the arrival of Sirius in the sky heralds the approach of New Year and we celebrate with a festival – ‘The Coming of Sopdet.’ See? Those are her symbols, stars and dogs. And there is her statue– isn’t she wonderful?” Adopting a suitably god-like expression of awe and respect Tom studied the portrayal of the goddess Sopdet whilst wondering what a statue of himself might look like. Sopdet in the lofty pointy white coronet of Upper Egypt crowned by a star was very much the Egyptian goddess. The presence of the statue of a Greek god such as himself, possibly minus the hairy legs if Lady TometteNut’s beseeching worked, could surely only serve to enhance her reverent position in the temple!

Adobe_20220511_223739“You know of her TomAstreaus! In Greece she is known as the Greek goddess Sothis and Sirius as Seirios. – the celestial dog in the constellation of Canis Major – the Great Dog and the Guard dog of Orion!”

Prompted by such imagery Tom’s inner poet piped up with a section of Tennyson’s poem, The Princess – “…the fiery Sirius alters hue. And bickers into red and emerald.”

“Sopdet is a Source of great knowledge and power guiding both the heavens and human destiny. TomAstreaus, she is the perfect goddess to beseech to change your destiny! She will surely take pity on you! If not, we will return and give her a little whack!!”

“What?!!”

“Yes, the statues residing within our temple walls are known as temple gods – they are tasked with listening diligently to our beseechings. We bring our requests to the appropriate temple god and they relay our beseechings to the god most suited to dealing with the beseeching. Of course they may decide not to grant the request so on the next visitation to the temple of the gods it maybe that we decide to whack the temple statue with a reed!”

ThomasinAsteria snorted loudly and struggled unsuccessfully to stifle an explosive, irreverent giggling fit. Fingers handed her a convenient to tissue to dry the tears streaming unashamedly down her godly features but that only served to accentuate her irreverent giggles still further. Fingers took matters into his own hand and clamped it firmly over ThomasinAsteria’s mouth succeeding at least partially in stifling her helpless giggles.

“It’s just a little whack – every now and again it is good to demonstrate to the gods how much they have disappointed us! – ThomasinAsteria please control yourself! Surely yourself and TomAstraeus have given your Greek temple gods a small whacking from time to time!“

Tumbling out of the chariot and into the marketplace, they found it to be teeming with Egyptians purchasing everything from medicinal products to amulets, fine perfumes, and jewellery, fruit and vegetables, exotic clothing…. Fingers and Tombie ran off, inexplicably, to investigate the grave goods stand whilst Tommy, the inner werewolf headed eagerly for the dead animals stand. Fingers the easily distracted Inner typist sped off to the papyrus and ink stand accidently taking Tombie’s arm along…ThomasinAsteria and Lady TometteNut were quickly engaged in the rugs and furniture stands, shrieking in wild abandon, over their shoulders – “Such beautiful and refined Egyptian items will look wonderfully becoming, adorning the Mansion-Villa, TomAstraeus!” Temporarily abandoned by his goddesses TomAstreaus was left to investigate the tools stand, the metal and leather goods stands and the salt stand…which was conveniently close to the live animals stand…

“Oh look! The evil wolf gargoyle door knocker – over there – shopping at the spell stand! Maybe it can persuade the Tommy knockers to go back to work…”

“No! Quickly ThomasinAsteria…. Hide before it sees us! Head for the Great pyramid by the river Nile!”

“But the spell to change your destiny TomAstraeus! They are written on very fine papyrus and once they have added your name to the spell, we can chant over it!”

“Nevermind the spell Lady TometteNut, your beseeching of the goddess Sopdet was more than enough – Now to the chariot! Fingers is waiting and Tombie can get the spell later!”

Holding tight to Tommy, the werewolf, with one hand and Tombie who was hanging off the chariot in a cloud of sand and flying limbs with the other, Tom let off a string of godly expletives and sent out a beseeching of his own to the goddess Sopdet along the lines of could he perhaps survive this wild chariot ride hotly pursued by glowing volcanic pyramid rocks? Fingers was taking his job very seriously and the chariot steeds were careering towards the Great Pyramid with all the finesse of those being hunted by dark creatures from the pits of hell. Glancing at the Seba-symbolled pyramid artifacts scrambling to catch up with them Tom couldn’t help feeling there might be some justification for that.

Oh gods! TomAstreaus – Quickly – you must put on some make-up!”

“Make-up Lady TometteNut? What are you talking about?! I am a god!!”

“Eye make-up TomAstreaus – it is completely normal in Egypt for men and gods to wear make-up -eyes with-out make up are defenceless against the ‘Evil Eye!’ ”

“The Evil – What?!! The Evil Eye? What Evil Eye Lady Tomette?!!”

“There is no time to explain now – Here, put on the eye make-up! Your inner creator and inner make-up artist will guide you in the noble steps involved!”

“It is said” the Tomipedia boomed through the clouds of sand and hieroglyphics “that the Great Pyramid of Giza was built specifically to align with the stars in particular with Sirius, Seirios to you TomAstreaus – the Wolf or the Dog Star.”

“This is the Great Pyramid of Giza?! Oh gods!”

“Yes. And the ancestral home of those fiery volcanic pyramid rocks ThomasinAsteria – the ones about to join you in the Chariot of Fire –“

“Oh gods! Lady TometteNut, help me to catch them! That’s right – hurl them back out as fast as you can!”

Returning its attentions to TomAstreaus who was standing god-like and all-powerful, or so he hoped, to the rear of the bucking Chariot, the Tomipedia turned up its volume and yelled determinedly over the screams of the women and thunder of hooves,

“When you have finished worshipping the Dog Star TomAstreaus…. “ It’s boom was laced with sarcasm but Tom chose to ignore that in a masterful display of godly disdain, “The constellation of Canis major (The Great Dog) not only accommodates the brightest star in the sky – Sirius (The Dog/Wolf Star) but also the Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy. We know TomAstreaus of no other galaxy bearing such a close proximity to the Milky Way. Hence the wolf star is also known as the ‘Watchman of the Heavens at the bridge of the Milky Way’

“And the Seba symbol? What else do you know about that?”

“The Seba? Oh that!” Feigning nonchalance the Tomipedia waited casually for Tom to dislodge the Seba-marked volcanic pyramid styled hitch-hiker clinging onto his leg, and toss it back off the chariot.

“Yes Tomipedia. That!”

“Oh TomAstreaus! You are so masterful today!” ThomasinAsteria gushed delightedly over the rising wind and the thundering chariot.

“The Seba,” the Tomipedia paused for dramatic effect, as the chariot swept through the entranceway and into the heart of the Great Pyramid,” is the symbol of the stars – associated with gateways and doors and time….”

“I think we already know that… anything else – that we don’t know?

“It is also connected with the concepts of leadership, self-control, travel, studying, and fresh starts,” the Tomipedia snapped huffily, before adding pointedly, “and it is associated with the Sopdet – Egyptian goddess of the Sky and Stars!”

And the Great Pyramid?”

“- Is a vortex-portal into the Canis major Dwarf Galaxy!”

PSX_20220513_143212“Look TomAstreaus! Over there – amongst the hieroglyphics on the pyramid wall – You have invoked the god of the dog star – Seirios! We must direct our beseechings towards him!”

Tom gave his hairy legs a brief glance simultaneously admiring his physique adorned in his godly Tomga. This didn’t seem an entirely appropriate subject for beseechings at this point. Fingers was driving the chariot of fire like a hand possessed and Tom’s inner werewolf was on the loose again. Tombie lurched after it, but his leg fell off, and the Inner Leader of the Opposition was shouting about the rights of the volcanic pyramid artifacts – currently being hurled out of the chariot and into its complementary flames.

“Your destiny lies ahead of you TomAstraeus, god of the Dusk, the Stars, and the Planets, and of the art of Astronomy and Astrology!” Seirios howled above the noise and chaos.

Yes, I can see that!” Tom yelled as they hurtled ever closer to the swirling eye of the vortex spiralling towards them, accompanied, inexplicably, by the tentacles from the “giant multi-faceted nebula vortex in the (mansion’s) bathroom” that had last been spied stretching down the stairs, which were on the last viewing an Egyptian ramp.

“It is written in ‘The Calendar of lucky and unlucky days’

“This does not strike me as a lucky day Lady TometteNut! “

“We really need that spell!

“We do ThomasinAsteria? Don’t you think it’s a bit late for that now?”

“Look on the bright side TomAstreaus!”

“Seirios -what does ‘The calendar of lucky and unlucky days’ say?”

“That is for you to deduce TomAstreaus – You are the Titan, who fought against Zeus and the Olympian gods!”

An almighty roar shook the Great Pyramid, and for a moment it seemed like the whole of the Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy and the Milky Way, combined into the heart of the vortex. Space and time melted into impossible dimensions, hurling the Chariot of Fire, its gods and goddesses, and all accompanying participants, on a mind-bending trip of carnival lights and shapes, and dancing hieroglyphics. Somewhere up ahead of them, a tiny wolf gargoyle doorknocker held up a sheet of papyrus covered in hieroglyphics –

“It’s all in Egyptian!” ThomasinAsteria screamed, spinning past TomAstraeus, caught in a cosmic whirlwind.

“It says…. ‘To Tom’s!’ “Lady TometteNut yelled as she floated, waving to them.

“That’s it?”

“No TomAstreaus …It also says, ‘Straight ahead to Greece!’ And just below that… ‘To the Canis major Dwarf Galaxy!’”

Adobe_20220513_150416But they’re all pointing in the same direction!!!”

“Oh gods!!! What now?!!”

Sirius the Dog Star   31 comments

GalacticWolves3126Sirius the Dog Star

Alpha Canis Majoris

Sirius (Alpha Canis Majoris) the brightest star in the sky is located in the constellation of Canis Major -The Great Dog, named after the Dog Star. It can be seen from almost every inhabited region on Earth’s surface. And in the right conditions can be seen in day light.

It appears to be a single bright star but is actually a large binary star system. The main sequence star; Sirius A, is 22 times brighter than the Sun and 6th closest system to our own. Its faint companion star, Sirius B (the pup) was the first recognized white dwarf.

Electromagnetic fields

They orbit each other, every 49.98 years and Sirius B has a tremendous effect on the electromagnetic fields of our galaxy, the solar system, planets, and Earth itself. When at its closest to Sirius A the magnetic properties of Sirius B and it’s remarkable density, create massive magnetic storms resulting in the stars exchanging copious amounts of highly charged particles. These are injected into the galactic magnetic field of the Milky Way. Sirius’s magnetic storms are particularly intense around five years before their closest approach, and for up to five years following.

1944 occurrence, was during our history’s greatest conflict, World War II. And most recently almost 50 years later, in June, 1993 when, Sirius was hidden from Earth’s view by our Sun, the largest flood of the past century occurred. Mississippi, (Nile River), overflowed its banks and that flood continued through till mid-August. When Sirius re-appeared from behind the sun, the flood waters receded and the immediate life-threatening crisis subsided. A reflection of the great rivers of energies streaming out from Sirius?

Liberation

Sirius is associated with liberation. Ancient teachings say the very concept of freedom exists in human consciousness because of the Sirius system’s influence. And every year, on July 4, Sirius is hidden from view by our Sun -America’s Independence Day! And Bastille Day, the French Independence Day, is July 14.

As the most recent "great conjunction" of Sirius A and B occurred around 1993, a wave of freedom was sweeping our world that climaxed in the breakdown of the communist rule in Europe and the liberation of the Russian people from the hard-line Communist party. As the cold war finally concluded so the Berlin Wall fell … events that occurred simultaneously with the highest intensity of Sirius’s magnetic forces.

SiriusCelestial_Sirius Associations

Sirius has consistently been associated with a celestial dog throughout the classical world; China, identified the star as a Heavenly wolf.” Ancient Chaldea  (present day Iraq), knew it as the "Dog Star that Leads," / "Star of the Dog." Assyria, named it "Dog of the Sun" and ancient Akkadia, "Dog Star of the Sun."

Greece associated it with the heat of summer calling it “Seiros” the scorcher or the glowing. Hindu writings referred to it as “Sukra” the Rain God” or “Rain Star.”

The Dog is also described as "He who awakens the gods of the air, and summons them to their office of bringing the rain." The Wolf (Skidi) tribe of Nebraska knew it as the “Wolf Star.” Further north, the Alaskans called it “Moon Dog.”

Mythology

The Cherokee paired Sirius with Antares as a dog-star guardian of either end of the "Path of Souls; a watchman of the heavens. The ancient Egyptians believed Sirius was the doorway to the afterlife and for 70 days following July 4, when the star Sirius is hidden from view by the sun’s glare they refused to bury their dead because during this period the doorway was thought to be closed.

In Greek times Aratus referred to Canis Major as Orion’s guard-dog, following its master’s heels, and standing on its hind legs carrying Sirius in its jaws. Manilius called it the "dog with the blazing face." Canis Major (large dog) seems to pursue the hare across the sky, the hare being represented by the constellation Lepus under Orion’s feet.

                                                          Mythol_Path of Souls Canis Major-Laelaps

In mythology it was said the constellation represented Laelaps, a dog so swift that no prey could outwit or escape it. Laelaps was given by Zeus to Europa, whose son Minos, King of Crete passed it on to Procris, daughter of Cephalus. The dog was given to Procris along with a javelin that could never miss. In a strange twist of fate Cephalus accidentally killed her in a hunting accident.

Inheriting the dog, Cephalus took it with him to Thebes, north of Athens, where a vicious but swift and uncatchable fox was terrorising the countryside. However no prey could ever escape the pursuit of Laelaps. Zeus’s answer to the unsolvable paradox of the inescapable dog in pursuit of the uncatchable fox, was to turn them both to stone placing the dog but not the offending fox, in the sky.

Ice wolves of Europa

Sirius is bluish white the dominant colour of the star and of the wolves and at rising and setting it flashes with the colours of the rainbow and the moon wolves.

The Ice Wolves of Europa are the “celestial wolves, the star chasers, the moon dogs of the night.” Known as the Moon Dog” and the Wolf Star” in mythology Sirius was one of the dogs given to Europa as a gift and a guardian. Today’s Ice wolves are – the most direct descendants of the original Pathfinder – the one known as “Star of the Celestial Wolf.”

                    sirius2 GalacticWolves FireWolves

Fire wolves of Io

All ancient sources described Sirius as a “red”, “fiery” and “copper” star. To Romans this meant “angry god” and they are known to have sacrificed red dogs to it and the hottest part of summer is still known as “Dog Days.”

Today Sirius is bright white, tinged with blue. The mystery remains.

  ~Fish Tails~

Fish turn up in the most unexpected of places…like the Moon! There is of course a Full Wolf Moon so it is only natural that there should also be a Full Fish Moon. The “Sturgeon” can grow to 20 feet long, weigh 1500 lbs and live for 100years+!! It is a very good candidate for the title of “The Big One!”  Unfortunately it could also carry the title of “The One That Got Away!” as it is a critically endangered species that MUST be released after catching…happily it is probably safe to assume this does NOT apply  to a certain hungry Ice wolf out on a fishing expedition!

Alternative Names for the Full Fish Moon

Rainbow Fish Moon and Flying Fish Moon also Parriotfish Moon

‘Fish Spoils Easily’ Moon!

‘Soaproot Dig for Fish Poison’ Moon!

Salmon Moon

Frozen Fish Moon

‘Moon When the Wolves Run Together’

Alternatively for those who like to howl at the Full Moon as is customary(!)at this time it is also known as the ‘Dog Moon’ or the ‘Dog Days of Summer Moon.’ This refers to a time when the Sun shares the same space in the sky as Sirius the ‘Dog Star’ which rises at the same time as the rising Sun. Caution should also be exercised however as the Aztecs referred to it as “Slaughtering of the Dogs” Moon!!!
