ONE MAN DOG:

Combining the temperament of the German Shepherd Dog and Laika dog breed types, the Russian GSDs form an intensely close, loyal and devoted bond with their owners, rendering them nearly impossible to re-home. They are TOTALLY SINGLE-PERSON DOGS, even if they have been brought up in a family home, attaching to one person only TO THE EXCLUSION OF ALL OTHERS, and making ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS whatsoever for ANY other family member. It is not at all unusual for it to COMPLETELY IGNORE any commands given by anyone who is not its alpha owner, creating difficulties in a family situation.

 

If they do show any sign of friendliness towards new people in the lives of their alpha owner eg marriage partner, it can take an exceptionally long time and it is NOT IN ANY WAY GUARANTEED, no matter how many years they have shared living with that person that this will happen.

CHILDREN:

This Russian GSD DOES NOT EASILY BECOME ATTACHED TO CHILDREN – unless the child is its alpha owner, and is OFTEN VERY INTOLERANT of them. Unlike most dogs if it does play with children it will be just as rough as it would be with adults. It will also WASTE NO TIME ABOUT SNAPPING AT THEM IF IT FEELS THEY ARE PUSHING ITS LIMITS TOO FAR such as if they play too roughly for the Russian GSD’s liking – a point of particular and serious concern to parents.

As with the German Shepherd Dog the East-European Shepherd is bred to have pretty much ENDLESS SUPPLIES OF ENERGY and it can happily work for many hours without any need for a break. WITHOUT WORK eg herding, competitive obedience, or agility it will quickly become deeply unhappy and develop behaviour problems. Ideally it will be given SEVERAL HOURS DAILY of mentally stimulating pursuits and dynamic physical exercise. These dogs are TOTALLY UNSUITABLE for apartment life and need to be in a home which can offer VERY substantial, expansive gardens.

HEALTH ISSUES:

Black (Traditional colouring)East European Shepherd DogThe East-European Shepherd has a broader gene pool than the majority of other purebred dogs, and with its status as almost exclusively a working dog when compared to other modern pure-bred dogs, is typically considered to be very healthy.

Whilst it DOES experience genetically inherited health issues, just like any other dog they tend to be FEWER AND FARTHER BETWEEN its equals of other breeds.

MOULTING

Bred to withstand the extreme climates of Russia and surrounding areas the Russian German Shepherd Dog can live just as happily outside as inside. Indeed OUTSIDE may prove preferable for more house-proud owners! IT SHEDS HAIR ALL THE YEAR ROUND, very effectively smothering carpets, furnishings and clothing ON A FULL-TIME, ON-GOING BASIS. However when the seasonal shedding takes place and the undercoat is replaced, SHEDDING IS TAKEN TO AN UNPRECEDENTED LEVEL of intensity! A very powerful vacuum cleaner is a must with these dogs!!

GUARD DOG:

Military Working DogsBite first, ask questions later dogs, Russian GSD s are well known for their practically silent operating status; it is very rare that they bark; and for their EXTREMELY ALERT AND HIGHLY PROTECTIVE instincts.  However, these dogs make excellent guard dogs that will unhesitatingly DEFEND THEIR TERRITORY TO THE DEATH. 

Weighing in at around 100 lbs (70-130 lbs for both sexes) the Russian GSD is a formidable and extraordinarily powerful dog; (males stand at 26-30 inches, females- 24-28 inches) and is a dog intensely and ferociously determined to protect its owner from harm AT ALL COSTS. The prospects of survival for a would-be attacker are NOT good!!

The Russian German Shepherd is also known as: East-European Shepherd, Byelorussian Shepherd, Belarusian Shepherd, Eastern European Shepherd, Byelorussian Owtcharka, Belarusian Owtcharka, East-European Owtcharka, Eastern European Owtcharka, Owczarek Wschodnioeuropejski, Vostochnoevropejskaya Ovcharka, and the VEO.

Fukushima Nuclear Denial

Remember Fukushima, March 11th 2011 – Many Would Rather You Didn’t….

 

citz_fihn1March 11th 2011: Three years later, marking the Third Anniversary of the Japan tsunami and Fukushima nuclear catastrophe, and still the denial and suppression of information, regarding the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Reactor continues.

 

It is information suppression on a global scale involving bodies such as the International Atomic Energy Agency, [IAEA] formed by the United Nations in 1957, national government bodies, the all-powerful nuclear industry and nuclear based scientists, not to mention, even the media, and others who stand to gain from the existence of nuclear energy.

"Fukushima is an eerie replay of the denial and controversy that began with the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This is the same nuclear denial that also greeted nuclear bomb tests, such as Semipalatinsk in the Kazakhstan, plutonium plant disasters at Windscale in northern England and the nuclear power plant accidents at Three Mile Island in the United States and Chernobyl in what is now Ukraine."

Furthermore, "About a month after the disaster, on April 19, 2011, Japan chose to dramatically increase its official "safe’ radiation exposure levels from 1 mSv [a measure of radiation dose] t o 20 mSv per year–20 times higher than the U.S. exposure limit. This allowed the Japanese government to downplay the dangers of the fallout and avoid evacuation of many badly contaminated areas."

Fukushima is different because of the sheer extent of disaster; Multiple meltdowns, on-going pollution of a significant chunk of Japan, airborne radioactive fallout conveyed by the winds throughout the world, and colossal amounts of radioactivity disappearing into the Pacific Ocean, flowing with the currents and transported in the systems of the marine life unfortunate enough to consume the nuclear contaminants.

The Medical Implications of Fukushima:

"Every increment of radiation exposure produces an incremental increase in the risk of cancer."

There have already been disproportionate numbers of thyroid cancer cases suddenly arising in Japan. This is a well-known primary indication of early radioactivity damage to the human body. Likewise damaged thyroid glands in Californian children were determined, in a study by the “Radiation and Public Health Project,” to be directly attributed to radioactive Fukushima fall-out. [Study conducted by Joseph Mangano and Dr Janette Sherman of the above mentioned Project and also Dr Chris Busby]

There is no such thing as a "safe" level of radioactivity. Any amount can kill.

In a study by the Stanford University, every Bluefin Tuna arriving from Japan that they caught in Californian waters was without fail, contaminated with radioactive cesium-137, [large scale emissions occurring from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant]:

“The tuna packaged it up [the radiation] and brought it across the world’s largest ocean. We were definitely surprised to see it at all and even more surprised to see it in every one we measured."

Growing food

How do we grow food in space?!! This is one of our most prevalent challenges, although it may well become an even bigger one here on Earth if we cannot figure out how to grow enough on the home world to feed our ever-expanding population!

Launching supplies into space is, of course, costly. So the ultimate aim for any long-duration interplanetary trip or long-term human presence on the surface of Mars would be to develop sustainable food cultivation techniques.

Extreme Gardening on Mars

Future Gardening on Mars may yet become a reality with the European Research Project MELiSSA on track to grow vegetables on the Red Planet. MELiSSA is an ESA project which “strongly promotes the implementation of space research based innovations on Earth via Industry.” Initially vegetables will be grown from seeds in a closed Earth system, later progressing to growing on the Moon. The first Martian vegetables will be grown in a Mars-bound spacecraft and if all goes to plan the ultimate planting and growing on Mars will follow.

marsveg_vasi.netNurturing vegetation and growing crops in such a hostile environment as space is fraught with difficulties and would involve a high degree of human ingenuity and new science. It would also require an intense and complex support system in order to succeed. In particular there is also the question of drinking water production, nutrients and crop cultivation techniques which will also require research.

If this plan does succeed, the new technologies and science necessary to achieve it could also be put to good use back on Earth, to develop land around the world which is not at this time suitable for food cultivation. This could provide a much needed lifeline to those countries where many of their citizens are starving, and also be of overall benefit in feeding our ever expanding population in general.

China to Grow Mars Veg’

SpaceFoodMarsGreenhouseState media in China have reported Chinese astronauts are preparing to grow fresh vegetables on the Moon and Mars. A successful test held in Beijing was conducted and completed for research purposes, consisting of four different vegetable types. Growing in an "ecological life support system" which relies on plants and algae this environment would create an opportunity for fresh, home-grown vegetables to be harvested for healthy, nutritious meals.

“Chinese astronauts may get fresh vegetables and oxygen supplies by gardening in extra-terrestrial bases in the future,” ~ Deng Yibing, a researcher at Beijing’s Chinese Astronaut Research and Training Centre quoted by Xinhua news agency.


3-D Printing of food

One potential solution to these issues could be 21st century open-source technology in the form of 3-D printers. Already being used in industry and the arts, 3-D printing looks set to become ‘one of the defining technologies in human space travel and colonization.’

If you are one of those angry American citizens raging furiously against the changes to your gun laws and the shortage of aforementioned item and plentiful supplies of ammo’ or possibly even a really determined, hard core survivalist then this 3-D printer maybe the revolutionary solution you have been feverishly searching for…just print a nice, shiny new gun and you’re right there in business to exercise your right to bear arms!

But how could the growth of a replenishable source of ‘Martian mushrooms and cosmic cucumbers’ – a healthy stock of crisp, garden-fresh veggies being a vital ingredient in ensuring colonies are in good physical shape – viably be achieved?

A 3-D printer controlled by software recipes, such as the one being developed by researchers at Cornell University, could be the answer to your unappeasable appetite for a nourishing snack.

Space Pizza!

It’s not quite a vegetable but it is the perfect choice for the first printed to order 3-D printed food; at your heady request it can print off a lovely big space pizza to satisfy even the largest of man-sized appetites!

It would be created by printing the first layer –dough for the pizza base, which will speedily bake on the hot plate it would be deposited on. This would be topped with a combo-layer of powdered tomato puree and oil then yet a further layer – of protein and ideally a blend of all nutrients and minerals required to create a thoroughly healthy pizza! Unheard of though a healthy pizza is, should it become possible it may even be possible to add medications where necessary, via computer commands.

NASA has been so enthusiastic about this innovative proposition for a galactic pizza express 😉 that it has approved a $125,000 grant for the development of a “universal food synthesizer,” a prototype dreamed up by mechanical engineer Anjan Contractor, of Systems and Materials Research Corporation (SMRC) in Austin, Texas. Based on 3-D printing technology this prototype also has the advantage of eliminating the problem of food waste.

“Long distance space travel requires 15-plus years of shelf life. The way we are working on it is all the carbs, proteins and macro and micro nutrients are in powder form. We take moisture out, and in that form it will last maybe 30 years.” ~ Anjan Contractor

Although this innovative design is currently only at the ideas stage, in the future it could transform the way we conceive food here on Earth. This in-turn may help feed the planet.
