Ultimate Wolfie Herr Selfies!   46 comments

Hazardous Days Of

Wolfie Herr Selfie Creations! Smile

“Freaked-out, Shock-Horror Wolfie Herr Selfie,” Life can be very Herr-y (Hairy) at times…The taking of a top-quality, prize winning  Wolfie Herr Selfie can be a truly herr-raising and frankly quite terrifying experience…. It frequently leads to the likes of the “Freaked-out, Shock-Horror Wolfie Herr Selfie,” is entirely the fault of the camera, and is totally impossible to correct with even the most sophisticated photo-editing software available Smile

“Underexposed, Green-eyed monster Wolfie Herr Selfie”On many inexplicable occasions there is no accounting for the behaviour of the camera’s wide variety of Exposure modes. The “Underexposed, Green-eyed monster Wolfie Herr Selfie” has become an increasingly common problem, particularly for DSLR camera owners. That said, if you’re smart enough to get to grips with one of these mind-blowingiy complex contraptions then you really ought to be smart enough to know better than to attempt a Wolfie Herr Selfie in the first place Winking smile

“Herr Dryer-Distortion Extrordinaire Wolfie Herr Selfie,”It’s also very well advised to switch off the hair dryer during the Wolfie Herr Selfie taking session…Drying your hair with one hand whilst taking a Wolfie Herr Selfie just doesn’t work… All too often it leads to the “Herr Dryer-Distortion Extraordinaire Wolfie Herr Selfie,” and nobody really wants to be sporting the “Dragged through a hedge backwards” (UK saying for the benefit of the US and European viewers) look Smile

“Herr Wolfie Through the Looking Glass Wolfie Herr Selfie.” When attempting to take a semi-respectable Wolfie Herr Selfie it is generally best not to try taking it through a Europan Ice berg….it really isn’t a good look…and neither is the resulting “Tufty-eared, Sphereised Wolfie Herr Selfie…” just because you have a fancy camera sporting a massive, over-sized zoom lens doesn’t mean you have to let the camera create a “Herr Wolfie Through the Looking Glass Wolfie Herr Selfie.” Open-mouthed smile (Remember it’s always the fault of the camera when things go wrong; which of course they do – frequently… !)

“3-D Squashed-In Nose Wolfie Herr Selfie”How wrong a Wolfie Herr Selfie can go is, to a point, a matter of dubious personal opinion. For example some Selfie-takers may, questionably, be seriously impressed by their camera’s previously unknown ability to take Wolfie Herr Selfies in 3-D… The “3-D Squashed-In Nose Wolfie Herr Selfie” certainly has some unique qualities all of its own. Naturally this is on the equally questionable assumption that you haven’t in fact created a 3-D printed Icewolf on the quiet, on your very own, very secret 3-D Wolfie Printing machine….

“Solarised, Black Wolf of Mars Wolfie Herr Selfie”Even then things can still go a little “pear-shaped” (“horribly wrong” for those of European and US leanings 😉 ) Of course if you like the “Solarised, Black Wolf of Mars Wolfie Herr Selfie” look then you may well be thrilled and highly impressed by the above Wolfie Herr Selfie… otherwise you may find yourself glaring furiously into the camera lens wondering disconcertedly how, exactly, the Selfie Camera or possibly your 3-D Wolfie Printer, yet again took matters into its own settings, hands, paws… whatever!!!

“Snowy Sumi Super Wolfie Herr Selfie”Ultimately it’s probably best advised to give up on technology altogether when it comes to creating an effective Wolfie Herr Selfie…For those gifted characters blessed with the ability to exercise artistic creativity with paints and brushes a very pretty “Snowy Sumi Super Wolfie Herr Selfie” is an excellent look to aim for… and will show-case your enviable talents perfectly Smile

“Ripply Icy Wolfie Herr Selfie” But for those who aspire only to the highly technical Wolfie Herr Selfie Camera or the 3-D Wolfie Printer, both of which, as everybody knows, have infuriating minds of their own and do whatsoever they please to a Wolfie Herr Selfie, exactly when they please, there is only one option left open when all else fails…Pot luck!!

Very, very occasionally, usually at the time of Full Moon when the skies are clear and a certain Full Moon madness is reigning, a lovely, “Ripply Icy Wolfie Herr Selfie” can occur, embracing the soft blending of moonlight over snow on the Ice-world of Europa, where the voice of the alien Icewolves howls the haunting song of the stars, echoing timelessly across the planetscape of their frozen world of Ice. Smile

Callisto_Credit_nssdc.gsfc.nasa.govCallsito [Jupiter’s Moon] – Valhalla Basin

Ice Events (Figure Skating, Ice Dancing and Short Track Speed Skating)

  • Ice skating on the frosty bright-floored 360 km wide central basin.
  • Snowboarding and hi-speed skating around the 8+ concentric frozen mountainous ridges

Asgard Crater

Nordic Events (X-country skiing and Ski Jumping) Snowboarding events

  • X-country skiing around the multi ring structure
  • Snowboarding jumps and ski jumping from the centrally-situated domed Doh impact crater dominating Asgard.
  • The uneven terrain and tenuous CO2 atmosphere allows athletes to pull off some very impressive stunts during these events!

Europa [Jupiter’s Moon]:

europa_solarsystem.nasa.gov_Credit_NASA_JPL-Caltech europa1_Credit apod.nasa.govSkiing Events (Alpine and Freestyle) Nordic Event (Ski Jumping)

It should also be noted that skiing on Europa will involve:

  • Slower acceleration when skiing downhill (Gravity compared to Earth’s, Mars <1/3, Europa <1/7, Moon 1/6)
  • Bigger skis maybe necessary to help with turning
  • Ski jumping will require longer ramps as there is less acceleration – no air resistance. No air at all in fact!
  • Crashes and falls will not lead to lost marks as you will be dead!!!

Snowboarding:

  • Naturally occurring ½ pipes stretching for 100s miles (caused by gravitational tides changing the shape of the surface)
  • Tenuous atmosphere means no aerodynamic drag so snowboarders can stand tall going downhill, not the usual crouch. Steering is also easier.

Ice Event: Curling:

  • Europa is ideal for this activity having the smoothest surface in the solar system.

WARNING!!

Radiation is very harsh on Europa; the result of dangerous belts of radiation from Jupiter’s planetary magnetosphere – the largest and most powerful in the Solar System. So don’t forget your radiation suit and iodine tablets! And remember! Snowboarding/skiing in lead lined radiation suits will provide an excellent muscle workout!

Martian Ice Caps:

Skiing Events and Ice Events: Bob sledding, Ice Hockey

                             Mars ice cap_rutgersprep.orgMars_Chasma Boreale_N Polar Ice Cap_themis.asu.edu

WARNING!!

Don’t forget your scarf! And remember Mar’s atmosphere is very thin so you don’t get any protection from the Sun’s energy bursts. You also don’t get to enjoy snowball fights on the Ice Caps – the atmosphere’s too weak and cold meaning snowballs can’t /hold together like they’re supposed to. And no! You can’t throw the ice; it’s very, very bad form!

A Martian Ice Cap sounds like the ideal skating rink but it is actually not that great for skating being cold and dark and snowing carbon dioxide. In fact it is probably better suited to Roller Skating!

Tethys [Saturn’s Moon] : Ithaca Chasm and Odysseus Crater:

Tethys_JPL_map_Credit celestialmotherlode.nettethys-ithaca-chasmaAll Nordic Events: X-country skiing and Biathlon

  • Great valley named after Greek Island Ithaca and the country ruled by Odysseus in mythology.
  • 100 km wide, 3-5 km deep and 2000km long running ¾ of the way round the circumference making it one of the longest valleys in the Solar System.
  • Runs approximately concentric with the massive Odysseus Crater, located on the opposite side of Tethys
  • Giant Impact Crater – Odysseus 400 km diameter is almost 2/5 of the whole of Tethys.

WARNING!!

Cold, airless and heavily cratered world! Surface temperature -187 degrees, very icy, and very reflective. Don’t forget the woolly scarf, thermal undies and snow/sun-glasses!!

Triton [Neptune’s Moon]:

triton-cryovolcanos_Credit wanderingspace.netNordic Combi: Ski Jumping, X-Country Skiing, and Snowboarding

  • Relatively flat, sparsely cratered surface with extensive ridges, troughs, furrows, plateaus and valleys, and icy, smooth volcanic plains
    • Perfect for X-Country Skiing.
  • Highly reflective polar caps consisting of nitrogen and methane.
    • A great spot to catch Galactic Olympic Ski Jumping!
  • Mounds and round pits formed by icy lava flows; long double ridges of ice with troughs in the middle.
    • Particularly well suited to Cosmic Snowboarding events.

WARNING!!

To aid launch jumping Nitrogen-gas heated shoes for generating explosive puffs of gas when feet touch the ground, are strongly recommended for all competitors.

Crashing is not recommended!!

Snow White And The Frozen Dwarf   27 comments

Snow White – World of Ice and Methane

Snow White (Photo Credit: NASA)US Astronomers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have discovered that the dwarf planet 2007 OR10 known as Snow White –once a small volcanically active world firing slushy water ice from ancient volcanoes, and boasting an atmosphere, is today an icy, frozen, dead world, tinged red and enveloped in a thin layer of methane that is slowly slipping away to be lost into space.

Snow White — orbits the sun at the edge of the solar system and is about half the size of Pluto, making it the fifth largest dwarf planet. Part of a larger group of icy bodies called Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs).Ironically Snow White has actually proved to be one of the reddest objects in the solar system.

However last autumn using a newly designed instrument called the Folded-port Infrared Echellette (FIRE), with the 6.5-meter Magellan Baade Telescope in Chile, Adam Burgasser, a former graduate student and now a professor at UC San Diego, and Wesley Fraser, postdoctoral scholar were shocked to find out although Snow White was indeed red, it’s surface was also covered in water ice.

“Water ice is not red! Although ice is common in the outer solar system, it’s almost always white~ Mike Brown, the Richard and Barbara Rosenberg Professor and professor of planetary astronomy.

One other dwarf planet that shares these characteristics is Quaoar, discovered in 2002. Slightly smaller than Snow White, Quaoar is still big enough to have had an atmosphere and a surface covered with volcanoes that sent-up and slush and ice, which as with Snow White flowed over the surface before freezing solid.

But smaller than dwarf planets like Pluto or Eris, it was unable to hold onto volatile methane, carbon monoxide, or nitrogen compounds as long. And two billion years after its formation Quaoar inevitably began to lose its atmosphere to space; now, and today all that remains is the space-irradiated methane which rests on the icy surface Quaoar’s, giving it a glowing reddish hue.

It is clear from indications on the spectrum of Snow White 2007 OR10 which clearly shows the presence of water ice that it too for the last ½ billion years it has followed in the footsteps of Quaoar, still and silent amongst the stars, slowly losing its atmosphere into space until now only a small part remains."

The existence of methane is still open to debate. But the use of a large telescope such as the Keck Observatory will show clearly whether methane exists on Snow White or not. If this proves to be so it will join Quaoar as one of only two dwarf planets that bridge the gap between the tiny selection of entities large enough to hold onto hazardous composites, and the smaller entities that constitute the vast majority of KBOs.

Moon Watch Wolf

Copyright Europa’s Icewolf – All Rights Reserved

Moon_Ice_Wolves_thumb11

Moon-shadows crept across the ice and snow capturing the White-cloud wolf, Moon-dog of Europa in incandescent emission rays, holding her motionless in the extra-terrestrial night. Moon-wolf watching. She stood quiet and dreaming lost in worlds beyond the imagination, distant, faraway, dreaming always dreaming. Moon-Watch wolf, reflecting the icy allure of the Europan home-world.

The sudden dazzling burst of stabbing moon rays jettisoning through star-black sky called to wolf blood and in answer to its compelling life call she raised her head to the cosmos calling the haunting song of the Moon-wolf on a frozen world of ice. Silver-coated Moon-wolf, the caller of the Moon-song. The voice of the stars as the cosmos rolled inexorably onwards looking always forwards never back. Moon-wolf watching.

Full alien moon shining huge against the back drop of ice-blue sky. Glowing male white-cloud wolf treading almost silently apart from the quiet crunch of fresh ice snow breaking under wary Ice-wolf paw. He paused momentarily, Europa’s alpha-male wolf silhouetted against the silvered moon hanging in surreal, splendid virtual reality. He watched her, she-wolf shimmering in the life and vitality contained in the silence of the moon shadows, flaring azure eyes flashing ice cold star power.

She spun in the moon-zone dancing to the beat of the Moon wolves song, time turning in a new dimension in the night-lit show that transcended anything seen in the star-zones, a flickering aurora of multi-coloured dreams on the moon-world’s edge. Moon-watch wolf, silvered white diamond-dancer. Moon-watch wolf alive in the silent beauty of the ice world moon-song. Forever Ice-wolf, forever Moon-watch caller.

MoonWatchWolf2

Moon-watch wolf forever on a frozen world of ice.

Look deep into the eyes of a Moon-wolf, see the beauty of forever echoed in the soul-spirit of the wolf song.

Jupiter’s Moon Europa-Home World of the Ice-Wolves

The Ice Wolves of Europa layer into this, the concept of alien evolution, the search for extra terrestrial intelligence, and the cool softness and also the harsh ruthlessness of life on an alien world.

Calling the Song of the Moon Wolves  Icewolves In the Sunset Shadow of Jupiter  Jupiter Moons Family inc Europa

According to Greek mythology Europa was a beautiful Phoenician princess abducted to Crete by Zeus, who had assumed the form of a white bull. Zeus later re-created the shape of the white bull in the stars which is now known as the constellation Taurus.

A unique and fascinating world Europa is one of a rare number of locations in our galaxy with an environment where it is possible that life may exist.

Europa is largely an icy frozen world. Its surface is one of the brightest in the galaxy, and also one of the smoothest. It is a unique and fascinating ice world and to date is unlike anything else found in the inner solar system. It is possible that beneath Europa’s surface ice there is a layer of liquid water. If this is so, it would be the only place in the solar system besides Earth where liquid water exists in significant quantities. The evidence is now strong for a subsurface ‘ocean’.

Water is an essential ingredient for the existence of life on any world. Combined with heat and organic-rich molecules there is a heightened possibility of life originating.

Wolves are one of the world’s most fascinating animals and the wild beauty of these haunting creatures of the night captures the human imagination in a thousand different ways. As the wild ancestors of domestic dogs, wolves seem both familiar and exotic to humans, which might explain their continuing fascination

Arctic Wolf-ProfileEarth’s wolves are found in a wide variety of habitats: Mountains, forests, plains, deserts, tundra and taiga. The largest North American wolves live in: West Canada and Alaska.

Native Americans revere the Wolf Totem in a different light. Within the Native American cultures, wolves are considered to be Pathfinders and Guardians. In parallel to this the Ice Wolves of Europa have long been regarded as Guardians of the Wolf Gates and Pathfinders of the Wolf-Ways. They are the celestial wolves, the star chasers, the ‘moon dogs of the night’ – the most direct descendants of the original Pathfinder – the one known as ‘Star of the Celestial Wolf,’ their haunting howl echoing across the wolf ways and through the rifts in time and space.

Moon-Wolf Watching on a World of Ice   46 comments

    New_EuropaCaller_of_the_MoonSong

Welcome to the New Europa!

This is a very strange new world we find ourselves catapulted into, and through who’s icy moonscape we find ourselves roaming. It spins much faster on its axis that is for sure! It’s day is considerably shorter than the Old Europa’s!  But our icy hunting ranges are rich with good wholesome prey and though somewhat alien in appearance also reassuringly fat and juicy! Unfamiliar moon winds drift through our Ice Wolf fur and new stars glint in unknown patterns in an alien sky. And in the coolness of the night the Ice Wolves of Europa call the song of the moon wolves to a sky with different stars.

As we experience the changes that have swept us into this new world…slipping between different realities we are reminded that all too often in life we cling onto the very thing we cannot keep hold of and even when we know it is lost to us our lives are shaped by that longing for familiarity. The fierce refusal to give into the process of adaptation serves only to ensure that we are trapped in an unchanging form because we fear to change. In dreaming of cities in the sky~worlds beyond the stars we embrace these changes and reach out to the new future that is ours to claim.

May wolf ever walk beside you, and grant you rest in his shadow ~ Europa’s Ice Wolf  2010

Is There Life On Other Worlds?   11 comments

Does Life Exist Elsewhere In The Universe?

The presence of water is absolutely vital to the existence of life no matter where it may lie in the universe.  In searching for the best habitat to harbour life, the essential criteria could be viewed as a rocky planet with a liquid surface ocean – plant and animal life living near the surface would need to utilise the sunlight.  An atmosphere would also be necessary to prevent the freezing or evaporating of the ocean and it would offer protection from potentially lethal ultra violet light.

Tidal Heating is an important factor in ensuring water is kept warm in multiple-moon systems such as those orbiting Jupiter.  Three of Jupiter’s moons – Europa, Ganymede and Callisto show indications of possible vast oceans beneath thick icy crusts.  Tidal heating prevents the oceans from freezing and heated water bubbling up from the ocean bed provides energy for the beginnings of life’s processes.

Europa

Although largely an icy frozen world it could provide a suitable environment for life to form.  Its surface is one of the brightest in the galaxy, and also one of the smoothest. Surface images show strong similarities to thawing pack-ice on Earth’s polar seas, and there is strong evidence suggesting the existence of a subsurface global ocean, sustained in liquid form as a result of tidal heating.

Titan

Saturn’s largest moon and 2nd largest in Solar System is composed of rock and water ice, and has a nitrogen-methane atmosphere with a reddish cloud layer above the surface.  Liquid methane can produce the same effect as water on Earth in terms of cloud formation, rain and liquid pools and possibly even lakes and oceans.

Enceladus

Saturn’s moon and the shiniest in the solar system.

The part of the atmosphere over its south pole consisting of water vapour gives rise to the notion that below its icy crust could be a hidden ocean. The newly discovered surface geyser, “Cold Faithful,” jetting water ice and vapour out of the fissures backs this theory.

Mars

2001-2002 Mars Odyssey found evidence of water ice near the surface. Polar ice caps are underlayed by caps of water ice. 2008 Phoenix Lander confirmed the existence of Martian water in frozen soil.  September 2008 snow was detected falling from Martian clouds. Whether any reaches the ground before evaporating remains to be seen.
