Galaxy’s Edge – The Final Planetary Frontier

Dark alien planetscape…eerie silence bar the wisps of the star winds whispering across a shadowed, dimly-lit terrain. The final planetary frontier, the most distant planetary world in the galaxy…ice cold and barely lit, by a star a million light years away.

The shuttle port was the busiest in the galaxy and settling back comfortably in few remaining free viewing zones intergalactic voyagers watched the ringed shadow of other worlds drift in the skies, as shuttles cleared the flight gantries soaring or roaring, depending on specific speed and flight capacities.

Tourists awed by the sight of the giant swirling vortex at the end of the galaxy – galaxy’s edge. The hub at the end of the galaxy teaming with life that many did not realise existed. Business and leisure intermingled as the vortex at the end of the galaxy swirled in dominant splendour, marking the largely ignored gateway to alternative worlds. It was all very self-contained and comfortable. Yerik and Yelena unashamedly joined the group gazing into the monumental machinery of the galaxy, worlds away from home. Dreams circled in their alien eyes reflecting the bright arms of the vortex. The viewing area alive with the lucky few who had chanced on the space city nestling at the end of the galaxy, a well-kept gem known to the lucky and the privileged.

Yerik glanced sideways at Yelena, seeing a woman lost in the darkened dreams of interplanetary mysteries. Drifting, sliding rifts of thought and endless dreams, meandering like a metallic river through the wandering imagination of a star-driven mind. Floating on the ectoplasm of a world of thoughts. Distant worlds drifted in her eyes, the echoes of the universe’s wonders ebbing and flowing in an endless cosmic flow, in tune with the darkened, radioactive river flowing in untouchable sentient streams through the interstellar star city.

A world built for thousands and inhabited by none. A radioactive ghost city immaculate and equipped with all manner of hi tech gadgetry. A modern day sentinel world humming with electronic life but devoid of any living being. Deep in its centre, artificial green parks and well-stocked shopping malls; still and silent, locked down by an electronic security system, manned remotely from a distant world a thousand light years away. Silent, dark transporter rooms housing brand new equipment that would never be used, never see the immaculate highways built for them. Silence. Sentinel. A world where only the cold winds whispered across a barren and darkened world….

Yelena.jpgLost and distant… Lured by a sighing solar wind that filtered the haunting gold-black suns, filaments tenderly flickering amongst the strands of her fractured thoughts. He had seen that look before…not often, but enough to know. Speaking her name gruffly, chiselled features hard and set, Yerik sensed also, that she was psychologically and emotionally a million light years away, caught up in the desolation, lost in the land of wolves…not of this world…distant and unreadable, and definitely not responding… and she needed to! “Yelena!!” He barked her name sharply this time, eyes, grey and shrouded in cold self-assured scrutiny, attitude dark and commanding demanding her attention in his own language, determined to exact a response from her one way or another.

She started as the alien winds brushed gently through her hair, as ethereal as the dimly lit world they wandered through, stirring her thoughts back to the alien reality before her; to the thrill of the final cosmic frontier.  Silvered seas of tranquility sliding into the night of another world. Vast and silken-dark waters, glistening in wonderful isolation in the flashing lights of exotic, alien eyes.

She turned slowly, gazing deep into his soul, drifting back to him from a great distance, nanotechnogy second after nano second…wolf breed…sleep walking… wolf flashed in her eyes awaking suspiciously to only half conceal the stark warning of wolf and woman towards the veiled threat of the alien male.  She responded to him in his own language, her tones low and throaty, her eyes inward looking, at some unseen mirage of this radioactive world.

New Horizons_Image Credit: Google ImagesCindy, the intrepid traveller and highly skilled, photographer was hitching a ride aboard NASA’s New Horizons probe, busy capturing extraordinary images of Pluto and beyond for NASA although she didn’t actually realise that this was the case, and was instead happily engrossed with preparing a series of exotic intergalactic blog posts for her WordPress blog!

She couldn’t help but notice that The Holler appeared to be accompanying her… a strange phenomenon she noted absently, smiling as she added a caption to her latest photo, but presumably nothing to be overly concerned about – after all NASA knew what they were doing…didn’t they?

She was a little surprised the next time she pointed the camera lens into the depths of intergalactic space to be confronted with the extraordinary sight of the Cameraoid meteorite shower and a very large black hole swirling towards her…great photography! She thought unfazed by the situation.

With the natural expertise of a born-photographer she aligned the complex photographic apparel of the New Horizon’s probe with the fast-approaching vortex and took a closer look at the tiny speck of starlight twinkling away cheerfully in the distant heart of it… Tom’s Mansion!! Cindy was delighted to find such a photographic gem availing her vision and further magnification proved the “starlight” to be the lights from the the Cameraoid meteorite shower glinting and sparkling off the bright new windows the Mansion had recently fitted for itself without Tom’s knowledge… and it was snowing! How wonderful! Cindy beamed to herself, admiring the architectural enhancements highlighted by glittering snow flakes against the backdrop of galactic space…it all looked rather warped however, she noted frowning slightly…must be something to do with the effects of the temporal shift occurring within the vortex New Horizons reported after completing a tentative probe into the subject. She should probably check out his blog page…he’d probably got a post up about that by now!

Tom most definitely had not posted anything on his blog page! In fact he wasn’t even thinking about it at that point, for a change. Instead he was busy fielding a particularly large and dangerous key that was burning it’s way towards the Mansion which itself seemed to be indulging in some serious shake rattle and roll techniques. He eyed up his reflection in the Mansion’s rather impressive new wiTom's Mansion took many forms! Image Credit: Google Imagesndows, impressed by the level of wildness his hair had reached whilst he dived and rolled in tune with the Mansion’s shake rattle and roll dance moves…possibly the perfect time for a selfie…well…possibly not right now…

A bone rattling shudder rumbled through the Mansion as it’s pace through the vortex – or at least Tom hoped it was travelling through…this would imply there was a way out…hopefully….eventually…. – increased rapidly surpassing the speed of light…the effects of which were…different!

Tom gurgled and somewhere in the part of his brain that was still vaguely rational and not, unlike the rest of him suddenly flattened and distorted like a lump of play-dough accidently trodden on and flattened into…. Curious shapes….warp speed he presumed giving up temporarily on the hope of recapturing normality again anytime soon. Oddly, and presumably as a consequence of having passed light speed and careered cheerfully onto into warp speed Tom’s eyeballs sprouted extraordinarily long stems and popped out of his currently flattened skull to wave around enthusiastically like two magnificent water lilies…there was no shortage of “interesting” things to feast the popped out of the head eyeballs on…..Tom just wasn’t sure whether his brain cells were at this moment working well enough to register what he was seeing….Quite possibly not he decided, taking note of what his inner physicist was working over time to explain to him.

In a concerted effort to prove his inner Physicist wrong the popping eyeballs sprouted a sudden growth burst – distorted reality his inner physicist whispered in his head reassuringly…not, and the view down the telescope that was a prime feature in the Mansion’s official Observatory presented itself to the flattened Tom in dramatic scenes of ….

“He (Tom) gave momentary consideration as to whether this also applied to the sudden appearance of an alarmingly large and active vortex swirling towards the mansion at speed. He decided at roughly the same frightening speed the vortex was approaching at, that it probably didn’t and slammed the window shut in the hope that it would change its mind and go away…it didn’t….!! Surprised smile

View from Pluto's Sputnik Planum by Ron Miller

Far away, in an entirely different dimension, Clowie was watching the meteorites from the small, frozen world of Pluto. Whilst enjoying the obvious benefits of being a strapping young Pyrenean Mountain dog, well-adapted to Pluto’s -230 degrees C surface temperature and cheerfully weighing up the odds on there being a subsurface ocean hiding beneath the methane ice, she was none the less delighted to see a warming bunch of burning mini liver cakes flying through the thin atmosphereSmile Liver Cakeoids!

She was easily distracted when Liver cake became involved in the equation… and flying high over Pluto’s icy plains and mountains in pursuit of the delicious mini Liver Cakeoids hurtling through the sky sounded tremendously appealing. Of course Pluto being as red as a particularly large liver cake it was perfectly natural that she was standing here in the middle of Sputnik Planum eyeing up Liver Cakeoids….that had been a result of Icewolf suggesting they pool sniffing powers and track down the best liver cake Pluto had to offer…

“There’s something very different about Plutonian geology – John Spencer Nasa researcher  Winking smile

Icewolf soaking up the Plutonian atmosphereWhen Icewolf wasn’t skiving that was…She was good at that! Something to do with soaking up the Plutonian atmosphere she had said…try Sputnik Planum she’d said. The pointed shaking of dusty white paws had, presumably been intended to convey the impression of a diligently digging Icewolf taking a break after hours of hard labour on the plains of Pluto… But Clowie was no dog’s fool and the large lump of liver cake stuck in Icewolf’s whiskers, told a rather different story. Winking smile Never the less here she was on Sputnik Planum!

Sputnik Planum - NASA

Her bipeds hadn’t been overly impressed about this unplanned turn of events, especially since Clowie had taken off at some considerable speed to reach her destination. Liver cake in the sky of Pluto and listening to the bipeds didn’t quite go paw in paw, so she hadn’t. At least not until she realised the screaming and shouting from her bipeds actually translated into, “Clowie!!! Chicken!!!!” Smile Skidding to an abrupt halt with scant regard for the pile of dazed bipeds tangled up in the leash behind her, she gazed into the Plutonian sky with rapt attention viewing a second Liver Cakeoid burst, which in turn drew her attention to the vortex whirling towards them apparently powered by swirling chicken feet. Clowie drooled delightedly, tongue lolling hungrily.

Not quite a hungry Pyrenean Mtn Dog but close!

Her eyes widened still further as she spotted a tiny Mansion hovering on the very far side of the vortex….Tom’s Mansion?? On a collision course with the the Liver Cakeoid meteorite shower….Splodge and Splatter! Liver cake everywhere! She wondered vaguely if there was anywhere in Tom’s Mansion to cook Liver Cakeoids…Winking smile
